Skitouring in Abisko

This is the tour for those who want to try ski touring and experience what it’s like to ski real off-piste and for those who want to go with a guide to find the best slopes for the day.

In the northern Lapland mountains around Abisko there are several incredible off-piste runs, everything for the beginner to the extreme skier. There are nice rides from all the mountain peaks visible from the road, but there are no lifts. So the best way to enjoy the mountain sides is to put on alpine touring skis and slowly make your way up on your own machine while enjoying the views of untouched mountains together with a guide.

The location of this tour can wary depending on the participant’s ski-level, conditions and prevailing weather conditions to create the best possible experience for you as a guest. Our ski touring guides are avalanche trained via SWELAV and have great competence in terms of safe route choices in mountain terrain during winter conditions and have rescue training in the event of an avalanche.

This tour is a private guided tour for you and your party and is booked upon request via e-mail no later than one week before the start of the tour.

Prior knowledge:

Easily able to ski downhill on a red-marked piste.
Have a good enough physique that you can stand to be in motion and get your heart rate up a bit during the majority of an entire day. Ski touring is a sweaty activity.

Tour details

The tour includes:

Transfer from accommodation in Abisko and Björkliden (select accommodation pick-up in the booking)
Guide with SWELAV avalanche training
A ski with the best conditions for the day
Tips and advice on how you can improve your off-piste skiing, both when ascending and descending

Mandatory equipment:

Showle
Probe
Transceiver
Helmet
Skitouring boots
Skitouring skis
Skins
Poles
Backpack, at least 30L (it must accommodate all mandatory equipment. Helmet can also be attached to the outside of the backpack if it is somehow not possible to fit it in the backpack during ascent)
Lunch (as well as any cutlery/bowl / cup etc. a hot lunch is recommended, e.g. a instant soup and not just a sandwich)
Thermos with hot water (min 0.5L)
Water bottle, at least 0.5L
Snacks
Warm reinforcement jacket
Extra set of dry undergarment (long johns & longsleeved top)
Extra gloves
Extra buff / multi tube or hat

Sunglasses
Sunscreen for the face, even if you don’t usually burn, the sun is strongly reflected on mountain sides.

You can rent outdoor equipment at STF tourist station in Abisko, at Laplandresorts in Björkliden and in Riksgränsen or at Höjdmeter in Kiruna

How to dress for a ski touring trip:

Layer 1, underwear, wool is preferred.
Ski socks, or a high-waisted sock with a good fit for the foot
Layer 2, a warming layer of fleece or wool
Extra down jacket to put on during breaks and for the descent
Layer 3, Shell clothing that resists a little moisture in the form of snow and wind. A jacket with a large hood is preferred so a helmet can fit in it if needed.
Accessories: Warm gloves, thumb mittens are preferred in colder weather and, if necessary, a liner inside
Buff or balaclava for your neck.
Hat that fits in a helmet, avoid coarse knit caps and caps with tassels and balls on the head.

An incredible experience. We had a mix of recreational rock climbers and inexperienced climbers, and they were amazing at meeting everyone where they were and maintaining safety the entire time. I would 100% recommend to anyone. Wonderful people, great experience.

Robin was easy going and friendly. He picked us up from our hotel at Abisko Turiststation and nice enough to drop us in Abisko downtown. We enjoyed our time. Recommended!

If I could give this more than 5 stars I would! Since it was most of our first time ice climbing, they did a detailed briefing on how to ice climb. Then even when we were climbing, they would also guide us through the climb when we needed it. They really did look after us very well throughout the whole tour, thank you both again!

An incredible introductory ice climbing experience! We were picked up in their campervans at the Abisko tourist office and taken a few kilometers away to an area with an ice wall near the road to try ice climbing with crampons and ice axes. The guides had everything very well organized regarding equipment: they provided us with alpine boots, harnesses, and helmets with headlamps. They explained how to use the equipment and even fitted the crampons for us. They demonstrated how to proceed with ice climbing safely and then secured us with their ropes. The guides were friendly and even encouraged the participants. At the end, they took us back to the pick-up point. The activity lasted a total of 3 hours. Perfectly suitable and safe for people who have never done ice climbing or traditional climbing before.
