About hiking

Get there on foot

People have been hiking since the dawn of time. Initially, it was to find food, water, and places to live. Today, we mainly hike for recreational purposes, but the goals of our hikes have not changed significantly. After all, what could be better than a meal in the mountains and spring water in a cup, and what could be more pleasant than resting your body in a warm sleeping bag after a day of hiking?

Where are you going?

There is a lot to say about hiking, about the best equipment, the optimal shoes to wear, what food is best to bring on a trip, whether to sleep in a tent or at campsites, where to hike—untamed wilderness or along marked trails and paths, whether to climb peaks or walk in the forest, whether the route is from A to B or a round trip with the same start and finish.

If you were looking for specific answers to questions like these, you will be disappointed, as there are none. Every individual is as different as every rock on the mountain, and it takes time to gain experience and knowledge about everything from what equipment suits your needs to what type of outdoor life you enjoy.

A good place to start is with a map and compass and learning the basics of orienteering. Then there is the physical aspect; it is good to know your own body, what pace works well for you, and how often you need to replenish your energy. Then there is equipment such as shoes or boots, backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, rainwear, and so on. The list can be long, and it is also customized according to individual needs and experience and, not least, updated when new smart outdoor gadgets enter the market.

If you are looking for an enjoyable experience or are unfamiliar with mountain environments, we naturally recommend that you book a guided tour. Guides know the right pace for mountain terrain, know when it is time for breaks and energy refills, find the best spots for great photos, and always carry adequate safety equipment.

Consideration and humility

If you are hiking on your own, you should always plan an extra rest day for longer trips, never forget your map and compass, always have a plan A, B, C, D, E, and remember that you can always turn back.

Also, be extra mindful of the right of public access in the mountains, use your camping stove for cooking, or bring ground protection and your own firewood, as the soil in mountain areas is too thin to withstand fire damage. Take all your trash with you, as well as anything you may find on the ground.
Also, remember to walk a good distance away, preferably 2-3 km from settlements, as there are often many people who set out from smaller communities and villages, causing a lot of wear and tear in the surrounding areas, and it is not uncommon for campers to be a frequent disturbance to residents.
Do not disturb wildlife and bird life. If you are walking off the trails, it is especially important to take a detour if you see animals that may be disturbed by your presence. Always be aware of bird sanctuaries, for example, and if you have a dog, you must check the rules for different areas, such as whether dogs are prohibited or must be kept on a leash.
