Touring skis or snowshoes are the best way to get around and discover nature during the winter and on foot with hiking boots or running shoes during the summer and fall.

The national park

Abisko National Park was established in 1909 and is one of the first 8 national parks in Europe to be established in the same year. As Abisko comes first in alphabetical order, it is usually referred to as the first official national park. The aim was to protect an area of high Nordic mountain nature and as a memorial ground for scientific research. STF Abisko Tourist Station and Abisko Tourist Center -Naturum, are located in the national park and the start of the King’s Trail in the north.

Ábeskovvu

The name Abisko comes from the North Sami name Ábeskovvu, which translated into Swedish means something like ‘the forest by the big water’. The big water refers to Torneträsk, which is Sweden’s sixth largest and second deepest lake. However, Torneträsk is considered Sweden’s largest mountain lake. In winter, when Torneträsk is frozen, you can go out on the ice to look for the northern lights or just enjoy the view of the surrounding mountains.

The mountains, Fjällen

Tjuonavaggi or Lapporten is one of Sweden’s most characteristic mountain formations. It is a U-shaped valley formed by the ice sheet and lies between Tjuonacohkka in the east and Nissoncorru in the west. Tjuonavaggi means goose valley in Sámi and the mountain peaks mean goose peak and woman peak. The valley to the west is called Nissonvaggi and means women’s valley. In the past, only women were allowed to pass through it and men had to go through Lapporten to avoid bringing bad luck, according to legends.

In the National Park, you can take the chairlift up Nuolja to look for the Northern Lights in the night sky during winter evenings, do some off-piste skiing during spring-winter days or hike to the top during both day and night to see the midnight sun, when it never sets in summer.
